Physiotherapy after Pregnancy
During pregnancy there are a lot of changes that occur in the body, including change in posture, increased weight, fluid retention and hormonal changes. Some women may experience muscle and joint problems around the body.
During pregnancy we see patients with problems including:
- Low back pain
- Pelvic girdle pain
- Carpel tunnel symptoms associated with pregnancy
- Other joint pain associated with pregnancy
Some of these problems may persist or begin after the delivery of their baby.
The Women’s Health physiotherapy team are available each morning Monday- Friday on the maternity wards.
We also see women in the physiotherapy department if these problems persist after they have gone home.
Other problems after giving birth include incontinence and divarication. Divaricaiton is when the tummy muscles move apart during pregnancy to make room for the baby, occasionally these muscles do not go back to normal after pregnancy. Your midwife or health visitor should be able to advise you on this.
