No More Scalpels: Keyhole Knee Surgery

Science Festival - Extraordinary Everyday page graphicScience Festival - Extraordinary Everyday - Jon Mutimer

Mr Jon Mutimer, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

This workshop takes you behind the kneecap to test your skill in the field of knee arthroscopy.

This keyhole surgery is the most successful of knee procedures and is often carried out on younger people, particularly sportsmen and women.

As keyhole surgery arthroscopy is less invasive than traditional surgery most patients need just a fortnight off work afterwards. It is used to diagnose and treat problems caused by trauma or degeneration where there are problems with bone, cartilage and loose pieces of the same which need to be removed.

In this workshop Mr Mutimer will be joined by colleagues including Dr Herminder Goshul who established the first arthroscopy course accredited by the British Association for Surgery of the Knee.

The arthroscope is a keyhole camera and is used together with ‘nibblers’ and ‘shavers’.  During the workshop you can try your hand at finding and retrieving ‘foreign bodies’ (dried peas!) inside a model knee, also ‘nibbling’ and ‘shaving’ cartilage or bone inside the knee.

See how good you are at ‘triangulation’ and following 2D images transmitted from a 3D knee.
