Intricate Operations: Special Care for Tiny Babies

Find out how technology helps us care for our smallest patients.
Staff from the Neonatal Unit in the new Women’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital will introduce you to the skills and equipment needed to support sick and premature babies, some weighing as little as half a kilogram.
Up to 1 in every 9 babies needs some form of special care after their birth. Neonatal units specialise in the care of babies born early, or with a medical or surgical problem requiring treatment. Babies may be with us for just a few days or for many months.
Consultant, Russell Peek and Senior Sister, Mel Randles will take you through some of the ways in which these babies are supported. You will discover how immature lungs can be helped as babies take their first breaths; how medication and nutrition can be delivered to help babies grow and thrive; and how advanced monitoring can help us understand what is happening when the patient can’t tell us.
With the help of realistic simulators you will explore the technical challenges of newborn care.
