Medicine Unboxed
26th September 2011
Whilst medicine demands technical excellence, efficiency and scientific robustness, do these criteria sufficiently define ‘good’ medicine?
Medicine Unboxed looks to engage the public and healthcare professionals jointly on a view of medicine that is informed by the arts and humanities as much as science, one that demands an understanding of the human condition, patients’ and clinicians’ experience, ethics and the goals of medicine.
This year’s event, to be held at the Parabola Arts Centre, Cheltenham on October 15th is titled Medicine and Values. It will look at what makes medicine ‘good’ and will explore the role of ethics, law and religion in informing the duties and rights involved when treating patients.
Sam Guglani, Consultant Oncologist and founder of Medicine Unboxed said: “We feel the dialogue between patients and healthcare professionals is overdue and necessary to the challenges of contemporary medicine. Medicine Unboxed looks to enable this dialogue through the arts.”
