New Women’s Centre expecting first deliveries

The new Women’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital opens its doors next week.  The Centre has been designed to enhance the quality of care for women and their families, and has taken almost two years to complete.

Outpatient and antenatal clinics open on Monday 10.01.11, followed by a phased opening of the Delivery Suite, Maternity Ward, Neonatal Unit and and midwifery-led Birth Unit from 13.01.11 to 15.01.11.  It’s expected that the first births will be on Thursday 13.01.11.

The Delivery Suite in the new centre will be the single, centralised maternity service for women in the county who require any medical or anaesthetic intervention during labour.  From 13.01.11 Cheltenham will be home to its new midwifery-led Birth Centre for ‘low risk’ women.  The equivalent low risk Birth Unit in the Women’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital will be open from 15.01.11.  The new Neonatal Unit brings together specialist skills and equipment to ensure the best possible start for premature and sick babies.

Dhushy Mahendran, Chief of Service, Women’s & Children’s Services: “We are delighted that the new centre opens its doors next week – it’s great news for women and their babies in the county.  The new Centre provides state-of-the-art facilities to help women with complex care needs during labour, while our self-contained midwifery units will enable women to give birth in a home-from-home environment.”
