Trust Invites the Public to Organ Donation Seminar

 21st June 2011

The Trust is holding an Organ Donation Seminar for the public at 6pm on 12th July 2011 at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

The event (which you need to pre-book) has been organised to highlight the importance of organ donation and of being on the organ donor register.

As part of a national project, the Trust recently formed an organ donation committee and appointed a Clinical Lead. There is also specialist nurse for organ donation working within the Trust.

Alex D’Agapeyeff, Clinical Lead for Organ Donation, said:

“There is an increasing gap between the numbers of people waiting for an organ transplant and the numbers of donors. Currently over 1000 patients die each year while awaiting an organ transplant.

“While over 90% of the general public would have a transplanted organ if they needed it, only a third of the population are currently signed up to the organ donor register.”

The seminar will highlight the importance of organ donation in terms of saving lives and will provide the opportunity for the public to ask questions relating to the subject.

The session aims to answer some common questions including:

  • Who can become a donor?
  • When can you become a donor?
  • What can be donated?

Speakers will include Alex D’Agapeyeff (Clinical Lead for Organ Donation) and Kate Hurley (Specialist Nurse for Organ Donation).  The experts will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
