Tackling infection is a top priority for the Trust and its staff and local infection rates are on a downward trend. Our comprehensive infection control plans include updated antibiotic policies, deep cleaning programmes, hand hygiene campaigns and rapid laboratory diagnosis.

Keeping our hospitals clean is an absolute priority and while we have already achieved a remarkable reduction in numbers of cases over the last year, we are far from complacent. We have a wide-ranging strategy and action plan to improve the control of infections.

The actions include:

• Deep cleaning: This is enhanced cleaning where wards are emptied on a rotational basis and thoroughly disinfected. We also use of new technology to decontaminate large areas and equipment with hydrogen peroxide
• Reviewing the prescription of antibiotics: Patients who take antibiotics can often be more susceptible to an infection called Clostridium difficile so the appropriate use of these is essential in reducing infection rates
• Extending the MRSA screening programme: We routinely screen all patients admitted for elective procedures and as an emergency
• Detailed assessment of all MRSA blood infections: This is carried out on a case by case basis to see if lessons can be learned for the future.
• Training for medical and nursing champions: We focus on the importance of hand washing and have introduced a Bare Below the Elbows policy.
