• A macrolide antibiotic, semi-synthetic derivative of erythromycin.
• Usual adult dose: 500mg twelve hourly – IV and oral.
• Dosage adjustment needed if renal impairment.
• Injection to be given by IV infusion only.
• Moderate risk of Clostridium difficile antibiotic-associated diarrhoea if prescribed for elderly inpatients.

Main indications:

• Severe community acquired pneumonia
• Legionnaires’ disease
• H pylori eradication (as part of triple therapy in Helimet® and Heliclear®)

 

Active against most strains of:

• Staphylococcus aureus
• Streptococcus
• Haemophilus influenzae
• Moraxella
• Legionella pneumophila
• Chlamydia
• Helicobacter pylori
• Mycoplasma pneumonia

Not active against most strains of:

• Enterococcus
• Escherichia coli,
• Klebsiella
• Pseudomonas
