- A macrolide antibiotic, semi-synthetic derivative of erythromycin.
- Usual adult dose: 500mg twelve hourly – IV and oral.
- Dosage adjustment needed if renal impairment.
- Injection to be given by IV infusion only.
- Moderate risk of Clostridium difficile antibiotic-associated diarrhoea if prescribed for elderly inpatients.
Main indications:
- Severe community acquired pneumonia
- Legionnaires’ disease
- H pylori eradication (as part of triple therapy in Helimet® and Heliclear®)
Active against most strains of:
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Streptococcus
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Moraxella
- Legionella pneumophila
- Chlamydia
- Helicobacter pylori
- Mycoplasma pneumonia
Not active against most strains of:
- Enterococcus
- Escherichia coli,
- Klebsiella
- Pseudomonas
