- Gram-negative bacilli related to Pseudomonas.
- Relatively uncommon cause of infection; often resistant to many antibiotic agents.
- Main pathogen is S. maltophilia.
Main clinical manifestations:
- Pneumonia
- Septicaemia
- Exacerbations of cystic fibrosis
- Serious infections are usually seen in debilitated or immunocompromised patients.
Usually sensitive to:
- Highly variable. If treatment required, discussion with a microbiologist or infectious disease specialist is recommended.
- Co-trimoxazole +/- ceftazidime.
Usually resistant to:
- Many antibiotics including carbapenems (imipenem, meropenem).
