- A glycopeptide antibiotic. Bactericidal. Rapidly penetrates into tissues including skin, fat and bones.
- Initial dosing is 400mg every 12 hours for 3 doses
- Further dosing is then 600mg ONCE DAILY starting 12 to 18 hours after the last 400mg dose (see example below).
- Take a pre-dose level on the 5th day if treatment is likely to continue beyond 7 days, otherwise monitoring of levels is not required.
- The Consultant Microbiologist will advise on repeat sampling, if indicated.
- Dose adjustment needed in renal impairment

Main indications:
- Community Acquired Pneumonia if suspected/confirmed MRSA
- Cellulitis if suspected/confirmed MRSA
- Chronic diabetic ulcers if suspected/confirmed MRSA
- Infection of unknown site if past history of MRSA
Active against most strains of:
- Staphylococcus aureus – including MRSA
- Staphylococcus epidermidis
- Streptococcus spp
- Enterococcus faecalis
- Listeria monocytogenes
Not active against most strains of:
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Escherichia coli
- Coliforms
- Pseudomonas
