  • A glycopeptide antibiotic. Bactericidal. Rapidly penetrates into tissues including skin, fat and bones.
  • Initial dosing is 400mg every 12 hours for 3 doses
  • Further dosing is then 600mg ONCE DAILY starting 12 to 18 hours after the last 400mg dose (see example below).
  • Take a pre-dose level on the 5th day if treatment is likely to continue beyond 7 days, otherwise monitoring of levels is not required.
  • The Consultant Microbiologist will advise on repeat sampling, if indicated.
  • Dose adjustment needed in renal impairment

Main indications:

  • Community Acquired Pneumonia if suspected/confirmed MRSA
  • Cellulitis if suspected/confirmed MRSA
  • Chronic diabetic ulcers if suspected/confirmed MRSA
  • Infection of unknown site if past history of MRSA

Active against most strains of:

  • Staphylococcus aureus – including MRSA
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis
  • Streptococcus spp
  • Enterococcus faecalis
  • Listeria monocytogenes

Not active against most strains of:

  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Escherichia coli
  • Coliforms
  • Pseudomonas
