A Guide to Antibiotic Assays

Information on performing antibiotic assays for monitoring levels of potentially toxic antibiotics are available on the pathology web pages of the intranet.

Currently, teicoplanin and amikacin assays should be requested on Microbiology request forms.

Gentamicin, tobramycin and vancomycin assays should be sent to Chemical Pathology for analysis.

Request forms should, as a minimum, state the dosing regimen, the date and time of the last dose, and the time and date of the blood sample(s).

It is the clinical team's responsibility to review and interpret the results. Further information is available in the relevant policies and pathology web pages mentioned above.
