Acute Pain Services
The Acute Pain Service is an in-patient service, providing day to day specialist management and advice regarding acute pain. The Acute Pain Service is a Trust wide service with a consultant and nursing team based at both Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Each team is led by a Consultant Anaesthetist with a specific interest and remit for the management of acute pain.
A nurse-led acute pain ward round is undertaken each weekday on the surgical and orthopaedic wards, the purpose of which is to provide advice on the management of acute pain, to review patients that have received input from the acute pain service, and to review patients who have epidural infusion devices, and patients using patient controlled analgesia whose pain is uncontrolled. The team at GRH also advise in the management of acute pain in paediatrics.
The Acute Pain Services also provides training and education for all members of the multi-disciplinary team, regarding specialist equipment and techniques used in the management of acute pain. There is also an established Acute Pain Link Nurse system in place at both sites.
We work closely with our anaesthetic, chronic pain, critical care outreach and palliative care teams, and other allied healthcare professionals.
