Hirsutism
Excess facial hair is rarely caused by virilisation. If there is associated acne, voice change, amenorrhoea or androgenic hair loss, or enlarged clitoris, refer to an Endocrinologist.
Treatment is by bleaching, depilatory products or shaving. Electrolysis needs an expert to obtain good results without scarring. Laser removal will increasingly become available as probably the best treatment for hirsutism particularly in fair skinned patients with dark hair. No physical treatment is available on the NHS for hair removal.
Hormonal manipulation with Dianette may help some women.
Vaniqa (eflornithine) can retard the hair growth cycle and therefore may be helpful as an adjunct to physical hair removal or on its own. It is applied as a cream to the affected area twice a day and can be prescribed by GP's pending PCT approval or as a private prescription.
