Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a distressing disorder especially for darker skinned patients. Treatment is unsatisfactory.
Advice
1. High protection factor sunblocks will protect the involved areas from sun damage and will prevent the normal skin from pigmenting which can highlight the cosmetic disability.
2. Cosmetic Camouflage. Provided by the Red Cross.
3. If the vitiligo is of recent onset try Betnovate Cream twice a day for 2 months but patients should be warned that atrophy of the skin may result which is permanent.
4. PUVA or narrow band (TL-01) phototherapy is sometimes helpful but it is a prolonged and rarely successful treatment.
