Information for Neurology Patients
Neurology staff see patients as outpatients at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals and as inpatients on both sites.
Inpatients are treated either under our own care on the neurology ward (Ward 6a at Gloucestershire Royal) or after referral from other hospital consultants.
Outpatients
Where are they held?
Outpatients clinics are held in Cheltenham General Hospital in West Block or Prestbury Block outpatients.
At Gloucestershire Royal Hospital clinics are held in the main outpatients department by the Main Entrance.
The department's specialist nurses also hold clinics in some community hospitals.
New appointments with a doctor have a 30 minute slot, follow-up patients 15 minutes. Not all patients need as much or as little time as they are allotted and so it is inevitable that clinics, if fully utilised, may run late.
We endeavour to inform patients of any unreasonable delay. All neurology outpatients, whether with consultant, neurology trainee or specialist nurse will be under the care of a named neurology consultant. After an outpatient appointment a letter is written to the patient's GP summarising the appointment and further plans.
Inpatients
The consultants cover the care of patients on Ward 6a on a rota. The consultant that a patient sees in outpatients or as a referral on another ward may not be under the care of that consultant on ward 6a. However, medical continuity is ensured through communication between consultants.
Discharge: On discharge from hospital a letter is sent to the patient's GP containing the most important medical details.
