Children's Services Staff

Our staff
A number of different people will be responsible for your care. Some of the staff you may come into contact with are:
Consultants/Paediatricians:
Other consultants may be involved in caring for children such as orthopaedic, ear nose and throat, dermatology and general surgeons.
You will also see other paediatric doctors, junior doctors and medical students.
Nursing team
Our nurses work in a number of different areas throughout the department:
- Children's Ward and Outpatient Department
- Neonatal Nurses and Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners
- Specialist Paediatric Nursing Service including endocrine, diabetes, oncology, respiratory, epilepsy, dermatology, bladder and bowel.
The senior Paediatric Nurse at the Children's Centre is Matron Jo Harvey who is supported by ward managers and a large number of specially-trained paediatric (children's) nurses.
If you would like to speak to the Matron or one of the ward managers they will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. They are:
- Diane Spiller - ward manager for surgical patients and adolescents
- Beverley Jones - ward manager for medical patients, including high dependency and oncology
- Claire Hunt - responsible for the Paediatric Assessment Unit
- Pam Francis - ward manager for Children's Outpatients Department
- Debbie Killman - ward manager for Battledown Ward
To help you recognise who is who in the children's deaprtments, here is a list of which uniforms the nurses wear:
Lead Nurse/ Modern Matrons: – Navy blue dress with maroon trim/ tunic/ trousers
Ward Managers and Sisters: - Navy blue dress with white trim / tunic / trousers.
Charge Nurse: – Navy Blue tunic with white epaulets and navy trousers
Specialist Nurses – Navy blue dress with pale blue trim or Navy Blue tunic with pale blue epaulets and navy trousers
Staff Nurse: - Blue and white striped dress / tunic and navy trousers.
Neonatal Nurses:- Wear uniform as above or “theatre scrubs”
Student Nurse: - Pale Blue
Nursing Auxiliaries / Health Care Assistants: - Green / white striped uniform.
Paediatric Respiratory Nurse Specialists
As a team we cater for the respiratory (breathing) needs of children at home, in hospital or in the Children's Centre and in clinics.
The service supports children with cystic fibrosis, chronic lung disease, asthma and allergy.
We support and advise a range of children in the community who require oxygen, suction, nebulisers or specialist airway support equipment.

Other members of our team
Play therapists:
Our Play team are specially trained to provide a wide range of therapeutic play for children. They will help prepare children for specific procedures, provide activities to reduce a child’s anxiety levels and also provide games, activities and toys to make a child’s stay in hospital more enjoyable and less traumatic. The Play therapists wear turquoise polo shirts and black trousers.
School teachers:
Our school teachers will provide educational support while your child is in hospital.
Domestic staff:
Our domestic staff wear purple polo shirts or pink tunics and blue trousers and will bring hot drinks three times a day for parents and older children and change your juice or water jug daily. They aim to ensure your environment is clean and pleasant.
Other important staff who may be involved in your care are: ward clerks, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and pharmacists
