Pathology

The Pathology Department performs tests on tissues and fluids to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of disease processes. The diseases may range from bacterial and viral infections to those involving a disruption of the body’s hormone and immune control mechanisms (such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis), specific organ problems (such as kidney disease), to problems associated with the blood itself.

Tests are used to screen for cancer as well as investigations undertaken on diseased tissue samples removed at surgical operations. The progress of a disease can be monitored by pathology tests to determine the effectiveness of treatment and to assist clinical management decisions. The wide range of diseases studied and the tests used can be viewed using the link below to “Lab Tests on Line”

The clinical pathology laboratories are equipped to a high standard and provide a comprehensive range of clinical services on both the Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital sites.

All of our laboratories are staffed by enthusiastic, well qualified staff and are designated Health Professions Council (HPC) Training Laboratories.

The Pathology Department consists of the following areas:

  • Blood Transfusion
  • Chemical Pathology (also known as Clinical Chemistry or Biochemistry)
  • Cytopathology
  • Haematology
  • Histopathology
  • Microbiology
  • Phlebotomy (collection of blood samples for blood tests)
