Antenatal Classes
NHS antenatal classes
Antenatal classes can help you to prepare for your baby’s birth, as well as looking after and feeding your baby. They can also help you to keep fit and well during pregnancy. They are often called parentcraft classes and may cover relaxation, breathing and antenatal exercise.
They’re a good chance to meet other parents, to talk about things that might be worrying you, ask questions, and to make new friends. They are usually informal and fun.
All pregnant women and their partners are offered a range of antenatal classes, either on our hospital site or in the community in health centres, for example.
The range of classes you will be offered will depend on your community midwife, but generally include one or more of the following topics:
- Labour and pain relief
- Feeding your baby
- Relaxation techniques
- Positions for labour
- Aromatherapy
Your community midwife will be able to explain to you exactly what classes are available to you.
National Childbirth Trust (NCT)
The NCT, a parenting charity, also offers a range of ante-natal and post-natal classes, advice and support for mothers-to-be and their partners. To find out more about your local branch please click on the following link:
