Education, Learning & Development

LeAD is a free e-learning resource to support doctors to develop an understanding of how the NHS functions and how they can personally contribute to improving the way services to patients are delivered. LeAD provides a knowledge base to achieve the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF). Altogether there are over 50 short interactive e-learning sessions which address the domains outlined in the MLCF. The MLCF is designed to apply to practice across a doctor’s career; although some sessions have been identified as particularly relevant to Foundation Training.

After the first two introductory sessions to set the scene, you can, over time, select any of the 50+ stand-alone sessions to meet your educational needs and the opportunities that present to you. Sessions are presented grouped by themes; however you can also select them by the MLCF domains. Each completed session provides a certificate, which, with your summary of how you have applied the learning to your clinical setting, gives your evidence for a portfolio. LeAD sessions can also be used as a resource for trainers and supervisors. In the resources section there are ideas on how to develop further the skills and attitudes needed for medical leadership, particularly within clinical environments. The sessions can be used to prepare for a group seminar, or to provide a quick refresher and update on key issues.
