Keeping Active

Active Travel

We encourage staff to leave their cars at home, to use public transport, to cycle and to keep active by walking more.

The half-hourly Shuttle bus, which was established several years ago in a partnership with Stagecoach, connects the two hospital sites and the Cheltenham Race Course Park and Ride facility.

Used by many staff, it is also available to the public and makes a contribution to reducing the county's carbon emissions.

Staff can also benefit from carsharing and cycle to work schemes, with secure parking for cycles and motor cycles and shower facilities available on arrival.

Walking maps

Both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital are only a few minutes walk away from the city or town centre.  Walking Maps have been developed to show the time and distance between different parts of the hospital sites and centre of Gloucester and Cheltenham.   To view the maps, click on Gloucestershire Royal Walking Map or Cheltenham General Walking Map.

Workout at Work Day

In September our physiotherapists organised a range of activities for a "Workout at Work Day" to mark World Physical Therapy Day.   The purpose of the day was to promote exercise and well-being in the workplace by encouraging staff to get active during the working day.  Activities included "stretch at your desk" sessions, rounders matches and walks.

Exercise Referral

Exercise referral is currently available in five Districts in Gloucestershire. The schemes offer support to people who would benefit from increasing their activity levels.  To take part in an exercise referral scheme you will need a referral form from a GP or health professional

Exercise referral provides clients with a tailored exercise programme to suit the clients needs. Schemes are offered at a subsidised rate to help people ease in to fitness.

The exercise referral schemes differ slightly in each District, however they are all delivered by fully qualified instructors who specialise in physical activity and medical conditions. .

Some of the conditions that people are commonly referred for are:

• High Blood Pressure
• Overweight
• Diabetes (Type 2)
• Inactivity
• Mild Depression/Stress
• Asthmatic
• Osteoporosis Prevention
• COPD
• Arthritis
