Medical Engineering
Medical Engineering are part of the Estates and Facilities Division and have workshops and offices at both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital.
Medical Engineering provides services which assist in the safe use and effective management of medical equipment. We primarily cover the main Gloucestershire NHS Trusts but also many doctors surgeries, nursing homes, ambulance services and privately-owned equipment.
The department also manages the electrical safety testing of portable non-medical appliances. This ensures the safety for staff, patients and visitors of Trusts’ appliances and those brought in by patients.
We are actively involved throughout all stages of medical equipment management. We provide pre-purchase advice on suitability and lifetime costing. If necessary, loan equipment for trials is evaluated and indemnity insurance arranged. We perform acceptance testing to ensure device compliance, safety and calibration. We also assist with equipment assembly and installation. During use we perform appropriate routine maintenance and competent rectification of breakdowns. We monitor hazard notices issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and equipment manufacturers, and perform recalls, checks and corrective action as necessary. At the end of equipment life we arrange appropriate disposal or recycling, and recoup any residual value for the owner.
To ensure an efficient, effective and accountable service, we maintain ISO-registered accreditation. This clearly defines our work processes, how we record and monitor our activity and how we strive to continually improve.
We manage all our calibrated test equipment and tools, which is vital to ensure accuracy of the work we do and traceability to National standards.
We maintain a comprehensive asset management system which holds thousands of asset and job details and provides valuable financial and reliability statistics. On-line reports give our customers live access to information about their equipment.

Other services we provide include:
- nebuliser and CPAP servicing and repair
- on-site equipment audits and reporting
- engraving and labelling
- surgical instrument repairs
- management of air bed mattress cleaning
- contract management for specialised equipments
- management of the Gloucestershire Acute Trust equipment libraries and technical support for their asset tracking systems
